Facebook & Instagram Ads for Local Businesses: A Beginner's Guide
Search ads catch people already looking. Facebook and Instagram reach the neighbours who'll need you soon. Here's how to use them without wasting money.
Google Ads shows your business to people who are actively searching. Facebook and Instagram ads are different: they reach people based on where they live and what they're interested in, before they search. That makes them good for building awareness in your area and for anything visual or seasonal, and less reliable for urgent needs.
When social ads work well for local businesses
- Your work is visual: landscaping, renovations, salons, restaurants, cleaning before-and-afters.
- Demand is seasonal and predictable: tire changeovers, spring cleanups, holiday bookings.
- You're opening, expanding or adding a service and need people nearby to know.
- Customers buy more than once, so a local following pays off over time.
Targeting your area
Target a radius around your location or service area, sized to how far you'll actually travel or how far customers will come. Keep it tight at first; wide targeting spends quickly on people who'll never book.
Special ad categories
Ads about housing, employment, and credit or financial services fall under Meta's special ad categories. They must be declared, and they restrict targeting options such as age and small radiuses. Real estate agents, mortgage brokers and recruiters should plan for this before building campaigns.
Budget
Start small, give a campaign a couple of weeks to settle, and judge it on what you can measure (website visits, messages, bookings) rather than likes. Set a daily limit you'd be comfortable spending every day, because that's what the platform will try to do.
What to post
- Real photos of your work and your team, not stock images.
- Seasonal reminders tied to what's happening locally.
- Answers to the questions customers ask you most.
- A clear next step: call, book, message or request a quote.
